Pondering text/page flow online

I know there have been millions of posts about this, but one of the things that really bugs me when reading blogs or websites is the inconsistencies of page flow. Pagination can be tricky, and I understand there are differences between chronological blogs/postings and the pages in an article, but it really jars my brain to switch back and forth between ” <— Previous” and “Previous —>” navigation.
